- Story Text: From hating to dating to mating and everything in between, "Boys and Girls," is a new romantic comedy that explores the games the opposite sexes play.
Ryan (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Jennifer (Clair Forlani)are opposites who do not attract. When they met as twelve-years-olds, they disliked one another. When they met again as teenagers, they loathed each other. But when they meet in college, the uptight Ryan and the free-spirited Jennifer find that their differences bind them together and a rare friendship develops.
Playing the seemingly mismatched Ryan and Jennifer are two of today's most charismatic new stars: Freddie Prinze Jr. as the uptight , true-love-seeking engineering student Ryan, and Claire Forlani as the free-spirited, commitment-phobic Jennifer.
At the world premiere of "Boys and Girls," in New York city, Prinze Jr., best known for his role as the popular handsome boy in the hit movie 'She's All That,' said he was happy to get a chance to play a 'geeky guy.' "My character is very different. He's something I never thought I would get to be. He's a little anal and little obsessive, kind of geeky, kind of a nerd and I didn't think anyone would let me do something like that."
He called the film "a contemporary 'When Harry Met Sally.' British actress Claire Forlani was thrilled by the chance to recreate an American college experience - one she had always been extremely curious about.
"I think it's (the film) about first times."
Many of hollywood's hottest young stars also turned out for the New York city premiere of "Boys and Girls." On hand were Sarah Michelle Gellar and Katie Holmes.
The supporting cast of "Boys and Girls" includes Jason Biggs, of 'American Pie,' as Ryan's pathologically insecure roommate Hunter; newcomer Amanda Detmer, as Jennifer's romanitcally confused roommate.
Detmer was drawn to playing one of the trickiest of human relationships: bestfriend and college roomate. She was also excited to get a chance to work with Prinze.
"Freddy is a lot of fun. He's a big prankster, he kind of likes to hit me and punch me, and sit on me and fart on me, and that's his way of getting through the day. It makes for a light atmosphere, so it's a good time."
Rounding out the cast is Heather Donahue as the brainy, by-the-rules Megan, who becomes Ryan's most serious college girlfriend. Donahue made a conscious effort to avoid being type-cast after the huge success of the independent horror film "The Blair Witch Project."
"I was taking as long as I needed to find something that bore no resemblance to the "Blair Witch" character."
"Boys and Girls" takes a look at the essential contradictions of relationships - aversion versus attraction, friendship versus romance, man versus women - through a comically different prism: college dating. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
