- Story Text: For the second time, Jim Carrey has teamed up with the outrageous fraternal filmmakers Bobby and Peter Farrelly and, also for the second time, he's gotten a new girlfriend in the process. Carrey and Renee Zellweger were among the stars at the World Premiere of "Me, Myself and Irene" in Los Angeles.
A lot has happened since the Farrelly brothers cast Carrey in their hit 1994 gross-out comedy "Dumb and Dumber."
Carrey has won two Golden Globes and seen his pay check mushroom from 7 million dollars per film to 20 million.
At the same time, the brothers have made a name for themselves in Hollywood as the kingpins of tasteless, off-color and offensively profane humor. Their biggest break came in 1998 when "There's Something About Mary" became the fourth highest grossing release of the year.
It was almost inevitable the trio would reunite and it happened for the new comedy "Me, Myself and Irene," in which Carrey plays a Rhode Island highway patrolman with Split Personality Disorder.
Charlie Baileygates' condition, though, is kept in check with medication until he meets Irene Waters, a beautiful damsel in distress on the lam played by "Jerry Maguire"
co-star Renee Zellweger.
Carrey and Zellweger worked together closely during production and started a much-publicized romance once filming wrapped.
This makes the second time Carrey has walked away from a Farrelly brothers project with a new girlfriend. He previously was linked with his "Dumb and Dumber" co-star Lauren Holly.
Aside from the two leads, the film also co-stars recent Oscar nominee Robert Forster as Charlie's sympathetic boss, Richard Jenkins and Chris Cooper as a pair of suspicious FBI agents and Tony Cox as the midget chauffeur who runs off with Charlie's wife.
As in "There's Something About Mary," the new film is packed with the Farrelly brothers' trademark brand of humor, including gags involving foul-mouthed little girls, dead livestock and misplaced sex toys.
It seems as though it's designed in order to purposely offend, and, in that respect, it has already succeeded.
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill is protesting the movie for what it calls an ignorant and insensitive portrayal of people with mental illnesses.
Of course, the protest isn't expected to hurt the film's box office returns too much when it opens in theaters throughout the United States on Friday, June 23. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
