- Story Text: Stars Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen graced the red carpet at the Mann Village Theatre in Los Angeles Monday night, (November 22, 2004) for the premiere of "Closer." The film, by Academy Award winner director Mike Nichols, takes an uncompromisingly honest look at modern relationships. The movie, which also stars Julia Roberts, is based on Patrick Marber's 1997 London stage hit.
"Closer" is a story about four strangers, their chance meetings, instant attractions and brutal betrayals. The film focuses on Dan (Jude Law), a newspaper reporter turned novelist and his relationship with Alice, (Natalie Portman) a former stripper and Anna, a photographer (Julia Roberts).
The story also involves Larry (Clive Owen), a dermatologist with a devious streak, who becomes involved only after Dan logs on to an Internet sex chat room pretending to be a woman.
Clive Owen, who in the film is involved in a number of memorable scenes with actress Julia Roberts, said he enjoyed the challenge.
"They are very powerful scenes," explained Owen.
"But, I'm a twisted weirdo, who enjoys going to the places and doing those things. I mean, they're tough, brutal, but they're very well written. It's a pleasure to work with a quality actress like her, with a fantastic dialogue.
However, tough or dangerous and dark it might be at times, it's still a pleasure."
Jude Law said working with the talented cast and the legendary director Mike Nichols, also helped him raise his "game."
"It was fun, lots of laughs. It was also like, in sports, when you work with people who are better than you, they raise your game. So, everyday the work on the page was challenging, working with people who are really pushing the bar and pushing the envelope, really makes you feel good about yourself, like you're really trying your best and giving your all.
Mike Nichols said what he enjoyed the most about making the movie, was watching the characters grow.
"Part of the fun is how they change in the movie and the little battles that go on," said Nichols, "especially Natalie, that she comes in and you think that she's the most adorable girl I ever saw and then Julia comes and she blows her off the screen, because she's a woman, not a girl. And then Natalie comes back and she's two rungs higher and more glamorous and more beautiful and their equal and they love each other and they have a battle. And the guys are out to get each and kill each other if they can."
