- Story Text: The buzz on the music scene is DreamWorks recording artist Kina, whose self-titled solo debut album is calling attention to her distinctive musical identity. With critics praising her autobiographical songwriting and powerful voice as the "perfect vehicle for soul, rock, and feel-good music,"
newly-appointed Wilhemina model Kina Cosper spoke with Reuters about her fast-paced life on the road to superstardom.
Kina's sound is fueled by a powerful voice, one that may evoke some of the female greats in the lexicons of both rock and soul. Her voice is fluid and flexible, able to growl and coo and snarl, then coax and caress.
Even though that voice wraps itself around a collection of self-penned songs that are both personal and universal, the Los Angeles native knows about taking chances, relishing the varying reactions to her music.
"I just wrote some songs," she says simply.
"I'm not going to categorize it. It's music, you know, I think it's wonderful that in Europe everybody is into the same stuff.
It's not so separate, and music, when you're speaking about matters from the heart or just life experiences, it shouldn't be categorized."
Kina Cosper moved from her native Detroit to Los Angeles in search of a new experiences. She bounced from one musical circumstance to the next, supporting herself with whatever came her way.
She found herself in the R&B group Brownstone, and enjoyed Top Ten success in the mid-nineties while on tour with the group while defining her own thoughts via songwriting, later collaborating with musical heavyweights, producer London Jones and manager Benny Medina.
"We clicked, it was more important that we clicked to me, and that he (Medina) got me, because I think there's a difference between me and Jennifer (Lopez) and Puffy (Combs) and Will Smith," she says.
She emphasizes that to her there is no shame in wanting commercial success, and plans to take full advantage of the ovewehlmingly positive reaction to her art and all that the exposure brings.
That includes her recent signing to the famed New York based Wilhemina Modeling Agency.
"I'm a model know," she says laughing.
"For me I think it will mean something in terms of me getting ads and contracts and maybe being a spokesperson for something, promotional dollars and that whole thing.I don't think I'll be gracing the runways, who knows, but I'll doubt it. I'm not a one, or a two."
"Kina" will be available in North America in July, with a Fall release planned for international territories. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
