- Story Text: A slice of summer madness hits the big screen this week with the release of "Brothers" - the manic tale of seven lads on holiday in Greece in pursuit of beer, girls and good times.
This latest example of an all-British film venture promises more than a touch of sun, sea....and spiritual awakening! Think British films, and you probably have an affable comedy or a East-end gangster movie in mind, but the latest British offering - which looks set to be a summer smash - is a sun-drenched romp filled with booze, drugs, sex and music, a typical lads holiday.
As Daniel Fredenburgh, who plays Julian points out, "Everyone has been on a holiday that's had, that their holiday will have had elements of this, sure some of it is really extreme and taken to different area, but everyone will relate to something in this holiday, and with it coming out in June, they will be just, yes, this is what I've got in store, or oh my God, this is what I've got in store."
Hoards of young British tourists will be heading for warmer climes this summer for a couple of weeks of partying in the sun, hedonistic antics - as revealed in docusoaps such as Ibiza Uncovered - are sure to be part of the agenda, but the pilot for the "Brothers" was actually shot in a rather sedate British seaside town: "We shot a pilot for it in England, we went down to Bournemouth to recreate Greece, actually it was a very nice hot day so it did work, and we raised the money, well, Martin raised the money off the back of that really. So it was a couple of years before we got to shoot the film, but it was good."
Directed by newcomer Martin Dunkerton and featuring a virtually unknown cast, the film showcases the best of British talent, as well depicting the some of the worst of British behavior - but as Daren Jacob's character, appropriately nicknamed 'Beercan,' discovers, such laddishness is not without it's repercussions.
"I do end up getting punched continuously throughout the film for various indiscretions which shall remain nameless at the moment."
But the film does have it's serious side, as characters find time amidst the parties to ponder over the meaning of life and love, and even search for spiritual enlightenment! "Brothers" was shot over a year ago after Dunkerton raised the money to make it by approaching friends and companies in his hometown of Cheltenham, and co-founding his own distribution company.
"I think in this country the biggest problem seems to be distribution, because there's plenty of scripts out there, and nowadays the independent market is such a huge area of low budget and medium budget films, and there's lottery money out there, and everything, the bottleneck is at the distribution level where there's not enough access for a lot of English films.
"It's quite a ballsy thing, Martin did a very ballsy thing making the film on spec and seeing what would happen with it afterwards, there are a few people doing that, it's a very risky thing to do, but it is caused by the distribution backlog. But it is a good time to be British and making films, and there hasn't been a better time really."
Dunkerton is due to start shooting his next film, the sequel to "Brothers" this summer, it will be called "Sisters" and promises to chart the drunken debauchery of a group of girls on that most famous party island of all, Ibiza. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
