- Story Text: The New York City Ballet are in Japan this week on the second leg of their world tour. They had excellent reviews at the Edinburgh International Arts Festival for their performances of Stravinsky's Agon. Reuters spoke to the ballet's principal dancer Jenifer Ringer, about her love of hard work, coffee and sushi.
New Yorkers love their city, and they enjoy their culture, too. That simple mixture is the inspiration behind the New York City Ballet.
They touched down in Japan after a grueling trip from Edinburgh, where they enjoyed excellent reviews.
Principal dancer Jenifer Ringer says she's looking forward to performing in Osaka (on August 23), on the second leg of the company's summer programme outside the US: "Great. It's just wonderful to be here. I have never been here before. It's very exciting. Here, I am going to be doing a ballet called Serenade. And West Side Story. I have two parts in West Side Story. So I am going to be tripping back and forth."
The New York City Ballet received an enthusiastic response from the crowds in Edinburgh, although some critics complained that the Playhouse venue didn't allow the performers enough room to do their best: "I did different things in Edinburgh.
It was some challenging stuff. But it was a lot of fun. It's definitely exciting to be performing these ballets in different countries because a lot of people have never seen our company and it's exciting to bring our stuff to these places."
The international tour is keeping the ballerinas on their toes in more ways than one. "This is actually a little bit easier than what we do at home. At home we might have six or seven ballets in one week. So this isn't so bad to have two ballets here. The problem is that it's compounded with jet lag and with a new situation and different kinds of food and stuff like that so two ballets is enough but it's not as bad as sometimes our schedule is at home because there's time to tour."
Nevertheless, Miss Ringer says she's coping well with Japanese food.
"It's fine. I love Sushi. So it's fine. But as long as I can get coffee, I'm happy."
New York City Ballet are one of the foremost dance companies in the world. They have one evening performance scheduled for Osaka Festival Hall, on August 23, which includes works by Tschaikovsky, as well as West Side Story.
The cast move onto the Orchard Hall (Bankamura) in Tokyo from August 25 to 27, for a further three performances before heading back to America. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
