- Story Text: Eighties pop icon Cyndi Lauper returns to the big screen this summer in "The Opportunists". Lauper's first dramatic role finds her playing a barkeep in a New York city suburb and paired with Academy Award winner Christopher Walken.
"The Opportunists" is the story of Victor Kelly (Christopher Walken), an ex-con who wants to be a responsible man, earn an honest living and put his past behind him.
But, as usually happens in the movies, Vic can't escape his past and is forced into one last job to save his family and his business from ruin.
Lauper co-stars as Vic's girlfriend Sally, a local barkeep who wants to see Vic keep to the straight and narrow.
In a recent Reuters interview, Lauper explained her attraction to the movie and to the role of Sally.
"When this part came," she says, "All these people seemed really real to me and I felt like I could add something.
"I knew the woman because I worked for her as a young girl. I was a mother's helper. And, I worked for a woman who was a barmaid.
"I understood that mentality of what it's like to run a bar."
Both actors have a lot in common with their roles in the film. Walken and Lauper are both natives of the Queens suburb of New York City, where the story takes place.
As for Lauper's co-star Christopher Walken, the former diva had nothing but praise.
"I think it's all about Chris. He's fantastic. It's so real and it's a departure from what you'd normally see Chris do."
A seasoned Hollywood veteran, Walken has acted in over 40 films to date.
His breakthrough performance in 1978's "The Deer Hunter"
earned the actor an Academy Award.
Also an accomplished stage actor, his most recent recognition came in the form of a Tony nomination for 'Best Actor in a Musical' for the Broadway production of "James Joyce's The Dead".
"The Opportunists" is currently in limited release across the United States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
