- Story Text: London's famous sports centre Wembley Stadium has been refitted to host the world's biggest and most ambitious rock concert. On July 13, performances by international rock superstars at Wembley, at the John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, USA, and in Sydney, Australia will be linked by satellite to provide a 16-hour show for television viewers around the world. The organisers have arranged to transmit the concert by landline and satellite links to broadcasters in Europe, the Pacific. North and Central America, and parts of Africa and Asia, reaching an estimated 1.5 billion people. It is hoped that viewers, and those attending the concerts, will make donations to famine relief in Africa, raising at least 12 million dollars (US) for aid work. Some 50 major rock acts are taking part without payment, as their contribution. In addition, technicians and organisations involved in transmitting the concert worldwide are providing their services free or at cost. The idea for the event -- named Lived Aid -- came from Bob Geldof, lead singer of the British group Boomtown Rats. He had earlier organised the first famine relief effort by rock performers -- the recording of a song by a number of British groups under the name Band Aid. It raised more than 9 million pounds sterling and Geldof personally supervised the delivery of food, medical and clothing aid do Ethiopia.
