- Story Text: They may be tough macho guys in their movies, but Hollywood superstars George Clooney and Robert De Niro aren't averse to sitting by a catwalk in Italy - and watching a stream of leggy lovelies parade up and down semi-clothed. Both were in Milan recently for fashion show - Versace's Versus spring & summer 2001 - and Georgio Armani's latest offerings.
While diehard fans of Gianni Versace's outrageously sexy gowns might cluck their tongues in disapproval about Donatella smoothing the aggressive edges off her late brothers designs, both critical reception and sales for recent collections have been positive.
Donatella gave a more ladylike spin to the over-the-top rock and roll attitude the house is known for.
That's not to say that Donatella still doesn't pack her front rows with celebs and blast the loudest music heard since Woodstock.
US actor George Clooney was immediately beseiged by camera crews (not to mention female well-wishers) when he made his entrance.
Separates for day were almost demure -- slim dusty rose-coloured satin pencil skirts topped with little shirts and black satin cigarette pants.
Pink lipstick and plastic high heels with straps that tied around the ankle and rhinestone jewellery gave the day collection a retro, slightly 1950s feel.
A sheer tea-coloured wrap dress with a big rhinestone buckle at the waist looked fresh, as did the simple, sexy skintight knee length dresses for day.
But Versace wouldn't be Versace without a few slits and slashes, like the little black dress with a diagonal sliver cut from collarbone right down to hip.
Roberto De Niro, Italian Oscar-winner Sofia Loren and singer Phil Collins flew into Milan to catch Giorgio Armanis Spring/Summer 2001 womenswear show and toast the opening of the designers new superstore.
The great man is celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of his privately-held fashion empire this year, which had more than USD1 billion in retail sales in 1999.
A star-studded audience showed up to view his spring/summer 2001 collection.
Actor Robert de Niro, actress Sofia Loren and Bond girl Maria Grazia Cucinotta joined musician and actor Phil Collins to watch the show which Armani hoped was a return to his roots.
The simple lines and unfussy shapes seemed to be a hit once more for Armani. Even Phil Collins who proclaimed himself ignorant of the fashion world liked the collection.
