- Story Text: Stars from the fashion, movie and music world turned up at New York's Guggenheim Museum to celebrate the grand opening of fashion designer Giorgio Armani's exhibition. His classic clothes from the past few decades will be on display for the next three months.
The VIP opening at New York's Guggenheim Museum saw stars from all walks of life celebrate fashion legend Giorgio Armani's new exhibition.
It's a celebration of the Italian designer classic clothes, from the traditional stylish suits to glitzy ladies evening wear.
Among those showing off their favourite Armani outfits was actor Jeremy Irons, Richard Gere, Glenn Close, Isabella Rosselini and Lauren Bacall.
The men all favoured the classic black suit, with many of the women choosing the sexy and slinky dresses.
Giorgio Armani said he was excited to have his clothes shown in the prestigious museum and rebuffed criticism that clothes have no place in an art museum.
He said he never expected to be asked to exhibit his designs, " No I never thought of it, I never imagined to have all my clothes here tonight, this is a very exceptional occasion, something very peculiar that I never thought of, or never expected would happen but its very gratifying".
Armani was joined at the opening by fellow designers who all paid tribute to his legacy, including Kate Spade, Vivienne Tam and Vera Wang.
Also attending and making a splash was Australia's young Olympic swimming star, Ian Thorpe.
The four times Olympic medal winner is in New York taking a few weeks of well earned rest. He says he's a big fan of Armani and is enjoying life away from his training.
"I'm in quite a strange sense because I'm not swimming at the moment," he said.
" I'm having a break from everything and I really am enjoying it, but I think when I get back into the water and start training again, thats when I'll be able to fully come down from it all"
Thorpe will return to Australia in around four weeks time.
The Guggenheim exhibition will be on display until January 2001. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
