- Story Text: Hot on the heels of the successful re-release of "The Exorcist," another movie about demonic possession called "Lost Souls" celebrated its World Premiere on Wednesday, October 11 in Los Angeles. The film's stars Winona Ryder and Ben Chaplin attended.
In somewhat of a departure, Ryder plays Catholic schoolteacher Maya Larkin, a young woman who was rescued from demonic possession by an exorcism when she was a child. As an adult, she joins with a group of priests who believe the Devil incarnate will one day soon inhabit the body of a human being and plunge the world into darkness.
Following a ritualistic exorcism attempt that goes wrong, Larkin is convinced the target of the Devil's attempts is charming, best-selling New York author and criminologist Peter Kelson, played by Ben Chaplin. Chaplin is best known for his roles in the comedy "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" and the World War II drama "The Thin Red Line."
At first, Larkin's attempts to convince the cynical and worldly Kelson of her fears fail. But eventually, he comes to realize that what she predicts just might come true.
Together, they join forces against the infinite nature of evil and uncover a conspiracy to claim Peter's soul.
"Lost Souls" is the feature film directorial debut of two time Oscar winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski. A native of Poland, he's best known for collaborating with Steven Spielberg on such films as "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's List."
To gain a deeper understanding of real life demonic possession, Kaminski and Ryder both had the opportunity to speak with Roman Catholic priest James Lebar, who has experience with conducting exorcisms. He told them that more than 20 such rituals were performed in the New York area alone last year.
Hoping to capitalize on the recent spate of satanic-themed pictures, including the upcoming remake of "Bedazzled" and Adam Sandler's soon-to-be released comedy "Little Nicky,"
