- Story Text: Hollywood superstar Harrison Ford is in Tokyo to promote his latest movie "What Lies Beneath." Speaking to the Tokyo press corp, Ford says he chose to make this film because he saw an opportunity to do something different and interesting! That's superstar-speak for 'I got a chance to be a bad guy.' Harrison Ford, best known as a squeaky-clean Hollywood action star and romantic lead, spoke to more than four hundred journalists in a Tokyo hotel to promote his latest movie "What Lies Beneath".
Ford, 58, will always be remembered for his Han Solo role in the original 1970s "Star Wars" movies, and his 1980s "Raiders of the Lost Ark" role of Indiana Jones.
So, the supernatural thriller "What Lies Beneath," in which he co-stars with Michelle Pfeiffer, is being seen as something of a change for the star.
"It's simply what I read in this script. I saw in the character and in the film overall an opportunity to do something different and interesting to me," he told the Tokyo Pres Corp.
"And I saw on paper a film that I thought would be especially entertaining for an audience and then I did understand, of course, how my or how the audience might have certain expectations of me and what I might be doing with that character.
"That would be of service to the film," said Ford, who flew into Tokyo airport on his personal aircraft.
Ford said the reason why he is still a movie star at his age is because he has varied the characters he plays and is not just an action hero.
"As well as having made "Indiana Jones" and other films that may or may not be called "action films", because I think that I have made very few action films, but I have done many other kinds of films during the same period of time and I have always enjoyed doing the variety of different kind of films and I think the reason that I'm still here is because I've being able to work for the various segments of the audience.
"I haven't tried to pleased everybody, everytime.
"But I have done very different films in that same period of time. If I relied only on the action films at this age, I would be out of business. So it's not so much I'm changing my image, I'm in fact continuing to do what I have always done,"
"What Lies Beneath" is scheduled for release in Japan in December. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
