- Story Text: Europe's largest street party - the Notting Hill Carnival - has sent visitors from all over the world as well as locals singing and dancing through the streets of West London. Infused with lots of Carribean sounds and rhythms, the Carnival's prominent stars this weekend were the children.
It was children's day at Europe's biggest street festival with hundreds of brightly-dressed kids dancing through the streets of Notting Hill.
Grey skies, rain and chilly breezes did not dampen the spirits of the participants or the thousands of spectators who filled the streets.
At least two million people are expected to pack Notting Hill's streets, squares and bars over Britain's three-day Bank Holiday weekend, to sample West Indian food, watch dance troupes and marvel at a whirl of sights and sounds.
The event was born to lift the spirits of West London's black community in the 1960s, tracing its roots to the island of Trinidad where the carnival tradition began as a celebration of the end of slavery.
What was then one of London's poorer areas has since turned into a trendy sought-after spot - not just for Londoners, but Hollywood too paid the area a visit to film one of last year's biggest blockbuster movies - Notting Hill.
This year's Carnival features 75 costume bands, three stages, dozens of sound systems and hundreds of other performers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
