- Story Text: A crash landing on the Red Planet, an exhausted oxygen supply, a dangerous robot and a space janitor-turned-hero incarnated by Val Kilmer: coming to a theatre near you. It's Warner Brothers new space epic, "Red Planet" - and Val Kilmer is on the promotional trail in Europe - kicking off in Paris.
In 2050, Earth is polluted and overpopulated, and on the verge of asphyxia. The only hope of survival for its inhabitants is the colonization of Mars. A program to develop the Red Planet and create oxygen on its environment is under war, but after a few years the oxygen production plummets. NASA send an expert team on its vessel Mars One to investigate the situation, but the spaceship suffers a major breakdown and some in the team must do an emergency landing and rush to locate the vital sources of oxygen. They have barely a few hours to accomplish their mission.
Red Planet, the epic adventure of a failed mission to Mars, was filmed in some far flung locations, desolate places in the Australian outback and Jordan, in spots as arid and hostile as those described in the screenplay.
"Being in a genuine, desperate and majestic location there I think adds to the feeling of the story," star Val Kilmer told a news conference in Paris.
For Kilmer, who plays Gallagher, the lowest ranked man on the first manned mission to Mars, this was his first experience with science fiction. I was pleased with his integrity, he said, and added: I enjoyed the character very much, the generosity of spirit that he has.
True to its genre, the lavishly budgeted Red Planet is packed with more than 900 special effects, created by an effects team straight off The Matrix. Some of the most challenging ones were necessary to bring to life AMEE, a prancing NASA robot with whirligig limbs and a terrifying, turncoat personality.
Tom Sizemore, Simon Baker, Terence Stamp and Benjamin Pratt play Kilmers astronaut flight mates. Carrie-Anne Moss is the mission commander. Produced by Bruce Berman, Red Planet is director's Anthony Hoffmans first movie. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
