- Story Text: Former Oscar nominee Cate Blanchett headlined an all-star ensemble cast in Los Angeles at the World Premiere of director Sam Raimi's latest thriller "The Gift."
This is Blanchett's first leading role since her Oscar nominated performance in "Elizabeth."
In between, she played a small supporting role in the Matt Damon film "The Talented Mr. Ripley."
In "The Gift," Blanchett plays a recently widowed mother of three named Annie Wilson.
To support her family, she uses her "gift" of psychic vision to give readings to her friends and neighbors in the tiny town of Brixton, Georgia.
But her gift becomes a curse when she is called on to help solve a brutal murder involving one of the town's high society couples played by Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes.
Also in the cast are recent Oscar winner Hilary Swank and Keanu Reeves as a troubled couple with violent tendencies and Giovanni Ribisi as an emotionally disturbed mechanic who comes to Annie for help.
The film is directed by Sam Raimi, whose most recent work includes the Kevin Costner baseball film "For Love of the Game" and "A Simple Plan," which starred Billy Bob Thornton, who, coincidentally, was one of the writers of "The Gift."
The film's subject matter prompted cast members to examine their own beliefs on the subject of supernatural psychic vision.
"The Gift" opens in theaters throughout the United States on Wednesday, December 20. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
