- Story Text: Penelope Cruz continued her transformation from a Spanish movie star into a Hollywood movie star when she attended the Los Angeles premiere of her latest film "All the Pretty Horses" starring Matt Damon.
Based on the best-selling novel by celebrated writer Cormac McCarthy, "All the Pretty Horses" is a coming-of-age story starring Matt Damon as John Grady Cole, a young Texan who finds himself without a home after his mother sells the ranch where he spent his entire life.
Lured by the romance of the cowboy life South of the border in Mexico and the promise of a fresh start, Cole and his best friend Lacey Rawlins, played by Henry Thomas, embark on the adventure they've always dreamed about.
Not long after they settle in as hired hands on the ranch of a wealthy Mexican rancher, Cole falls in love with the rancher's daughter Alejandra, played by Penelope Cruz.
However, the affair is forbidden by her traditional family, and Cole soon finds himself on a journey he could never have expected that tests his resilience, defines his maturity and changes his life forever.
The film is directed by Billy Bob Thornton, who won an Oscar for adapting the screenplay of "Slingblade," a film he also directed and starred in.
He also has acted in such movies as "Armageddon" with Bruce Willis and Sam Raimi's "A Simple Plan," for which he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
"All the Pretty Horses" also marks the continuing evolution of Penelope Cruz into a worldwide movie star.
Although she's best known for starring in dozens of Spanish films such as "Belle Epoque," "Jamon, Jamon" and "All About My Mother," she recently started playing in American movies such as "The Hi Lo Country" with Woody Harrelson and this past summer's romantic comedy "Woman on Top."
The film was shot primarily in Texas and New Mexico, two vast states that capture the many different environments through which John Grady passes on his journey. For many weeks, the production was based in the Spanish colonial city of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
For all the actors, getting ready for production meant more than a month of intensive training with horse wranglers and five or six hours of riding each day.
The goal was to build in just a few weeks the kind of familiarity with horses the Cole and his friends would have had since childhood.
