- Story Text: It's been a good year for Moby. His album 'Play' hit the charts with sales of six million worldwide. He picked up an MTV award for 'Natural Blues' and it's impossible to count how many of his songs have featured in Hollywood blockbuster movies and TV commercials.
Now, after 21 months on the road, Moby is saying good-bye to 2000 in Edinburgh before flying back to New York for some new smash hit compositions.
If you've been to the cinema or watched TV last year, chances are you've come across his songs more than once or twice. Moby's success has been enormous and amongst his biggest fans are Elton John and Madonna.
"When I make records, I do everything myself, because that's just what I enjoy, what I am comfortable with. If I work with other musicians, I need to wait around for them and I become self conscious when other people are around; so, if I'm working by myself, I can be completely unselfconscious and I love playing different instruments. I love playing guitar, I love playing bass, I love playing piano. So if I am doing things myself, I can you know, play all these different instruments", he says.
Moby's not just dedicated to his music - a philosophy student, devout Christian and vegan, he's got strong views on issues ranging from animal rights to environment.
But, he is careful to keep these views out of his music.
" In the past I've tried to write songs that have sort of addressed my political beliefs or my cultural orientations and they have always been bad songs; like they've always come across as really heavy handed and simple and I just realised that, I think, my potential strength as a musician is to write emotional music and not issue oriented music."
Moby's 21-month mammoth tour to promote 'Play' comes to an end in Scotland on New Years eve. After that, he's ready to go home - but not to relax.
"The last show of this tour is December the 31st, New Years Eve, in Edinburgh castle and at that point, I will have been on the road for 21 months and basically my goal when the touris to go right back home to New York and start making another record. I don't feel the need to go on vacation; I don't feel the need to take a holiday. You know, if I take two days off, I feel guilty. So I don't understand, you hear about musicians who take a year off or take six months off. Honestly, if I take two days off without working I start to feel really guilty, so the tour ends, I just go home to New York and start working again." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
