- Story Text: Pop superstar Madonna is to marry her film director boyfriend Guy Ritchie in the Scottish Highlands on December 22, it was confirmed today. The banns signaling the forthcoming marriage were posted at the Dornoch registrar's office in Sutherland for what will be the show business wedding of the year in Britain.
Madonna is to marry her film director boyfriend Guy Ritchie in the Scottish Highlands three days before Christmas, it was confirmed on Thursday (December 7).
The wedding will crown a triumphant year for The Queen of Pop, dubbed "McDonna" by the tabloids after she picked Scotland for her big day on December 22.
Back in the charts at the age of 42 after the birth of Rocco, her son with Ritchie, she attracted a world record webcast audience of nine million fans last month for her first British concert in seven years at the Brixton Academy.
The banns signalling the forthcoming marriage were posted at the Dornoch registrar's office in Sutherland.
"There is a notice on the board in the council offices,"
said Dornoch registrar Leslie Conner.
Tabloid speculation about the wedding has reached fever pitch with the American star tipped to wear a wedding gown by Stella McCartney while Ritchie would be kitted out in a kilt.
Madonna's four-year-old daughter Lourdes is expected to be a bridesmaid at the glittering ceremony in Dornoch Cathedral.
Weather forecasters warned the elegant icon could be in for a windy day. "It is notoriously unsettled at this time of the year," a spokesman for the Meteorological Office said.
It will be in sharp contrast to the Material Girl's first wedding in 1985 to Hollywood star Sean Penn in the Californian sunshine. That stormy marriage ended after four years.
Madonna and Ritchie, 10 years her junior, paid a flying visit to Scotland earlier this week, sparking speculation that they were laying plans for their big day.
Hot tip to host the reception is Skibo Castle, a turreted pile on Scotland's northeast coast that is a favourite backdrop for the weddings of the rich and famous.
Actors Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle, stars of the Scottish cult movie "Trainspotting", both held their weddings in its oak-panelled halls.
The castle is also reputed to be a favourite bolt-hole for Hollywood stars Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Sean Connery and Jack Nicholson, as well as billionaire Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
The castle owners have refused to comment on whether the singer has made any bookings there.
Her Christmas nuptials wrap up a memorable millennium year for Madonna.
The singer, born Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone in Bay City, Michigan, has reinvented her image more times than David Bowie. Her new album "Music" went to number one in 23 countries.
She then followed up with a return to the stage, playing to invited audiences at two concerts in New York and London that won massive media coverage and heralded her return to the frontline in the notoriously fickle pop business. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
