- Story Text: American acts reigned supreme at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards in Stockholm, scooping all but two of the prestigious awards. The dazzling two hour show featured performances from a stunning line-up of talent - and proved why the ceremony has earned a reputation as the hottest music event of the year.
Controversial rapper Eminem and eternal superstar Madonna led an American charge at the MTV Europe Awards, beamed to 1 billion pop fans around the world.
Americans claimed 10 of the top 12 prizes -- and it was left to Robbie Williams and All Saints to save the honor of Britpop at the awards, a major showcase for the world's top pop stars.
Jennifer Lopez premiered her new single at the show and then had double cause for celebration when she landed the Best R&B award.
The Backstreet Boys, billed as the world's biggest group now their album sales have topped 55 million, was picked as Best Group. It was a perfect send-off for the superstars who fly from Stockholm Friday on a 100-hour tour of six continents to promote their new album "Black and Blue."
The Spice Girls performed together at the slickly produced two-hour show but came away empty-handed on the awards front.
Eminem, whose violent lyrics have provoked outrage, and Madonna, hitting the pop scene running again after the birth of her son, won two awards apiece at the glittering ceremony that was beamed everywhere from Argentina to New Zealand by the cable television network.
Eminem sent a recorded message to the ceremony, saying: "I worked long and hard to have this award and I finally got it and I can't tell you what it means to me."
Eminem won for Best Album and the Best Hip Hop award, much to the delight of awards host Wyclef Jean of the Fugees.
Madonna, her pop energy showing no signs of waning atC 42, won the Best Female award and also Best Dance.
Girl-group All Saints scooped Best Pop and performed their hit single from the Leonardo Di Caprio film, The Beach. The girls were drafted in at the last minute to play on the night, just in case Robbie Williams had to pull out through illness, but Williams proved himself something of a trouper as he defied doctor's orders, fighting off exhaustion and gastroenteritis to perform a duet with Kylie Minogue.
He was rewarded with the Best Song award for his "Rock DJ."
The flamboyant singer joked that it was a "silly song".
Latin heart-throb Ricky Martin fought off stiff competition from Eminem, Ireland's Ronan Keating and Robbie Williams for the Best Male Award.
But with all the glitz and glamour, and some of the biggest names on the music scene, the host of the night Wyclef Jean managed to attract his fair share of attention, singing, back-flipping and even stripping his way through the proceedings.
