- Story Text: James Bond fans all over the world will be checking their bank balances ahead of a Bond memorabilia auction later this month.
007 enthusiasts are in for a treat when the eye-catching bikini worn by Ursula Andress in the first Bond film 'Dr No' and the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 from "GoldenEye', among other things, come under the Hammer at Christie's second sale of Bond memorabilia.
The first auction of James Bond memorabilia was held at Christie's auctioneers in September 1998 and raised nearly half a million pounds, far exceeding expectations.
As a result, organisers decided upon a second sale of 007 goodies and this time they have gathered more than 250 lots for Bond fans to choose from. The items under the hammer span the complete series of Bond films from the very first 'Dr No' released in 1962 to the last film, 'The World is not Enough', released in 1999.
Experts beg to differ over which items in the sale will fetch the highest prices but they do agree that two lots in particular are bound to attract a lot of attention.
The first is the famous silver 1965 Aston Martin DB5 which featured in the Bond film 'GoldenEye' starring Pierce Brosnan in 1995. It's one of two Aston Martin DB5's used in a nail-biting chase above Monte Carlo and is estimated to fetch at least 100,000-150,000 pounds (sterling).
As far as the creative director of 007 magazine is concerned though, it's the bikini that actress Ursula Andress wore in 'Dr No' when she emerged from the sea, that is set to fetch a price beyond all expectations: 'I think the most significant piece must be Ursula Andress's bikini which I would imagine the price will go through the roof, I think it will be very surprising - a lot of people will have a sharp intake of breath I think,' he said.
Andress has owned the bikini since appearing in 'Dr No' as the character Honey Ryder, and only recently decided to put it up for auction. The ivory coloured cotton bikini, the only one made for and worn by Andress in the film, was designed by her in conjunction with the film's director, Terence Young.
It was made in Jamaica, where much of the filming took place, by a West-Indian dressmaker and was designed to be a 'practical working garment' able to withstand the rigours of Honey Ryder's role. It will be sold on 14th February with several colour and black and white stills from the film.
Also included in the Bond memorabilia sale will be two license plates taken from two of the Aston Martin DB5s used for the promotion of 'Goldfinger' and 'Thunderball' , various gadgets including a specially adapted Rolex wristwatch, a Walther PPK air pistol held by Sean Connery for the advertising campaign for 'From Russia With Love' and a selection of film posters from all the Bond films. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
