- Story Text: British saxophonist, Courtney Pine, who is known for using technology in his jazz music, has taken a trip to the Orient. Reuters caught up with Pine as he prepared for a concert in Istanbul, Turkey and discoverd why Pine has taken an interest in Turkish music.
Britains best known young jazz musician was in Istanbul for two concerts held at the city's the Babylon Club.
Known for his use of technology in his music Courtney Pine performed songs mostly from his latest album, 'Back in the Day.' Mixing the old sounds with 21st century technology, Courtney Pine explained that he'd recorded his latest album totally on computer.
Using computers as a recording tool, and employing technology throughout his latest album, Courtney Pine says the latest album cost him a third of the budget of his previous one.
Courtney Pine said by utilizing technology he can get his musicians to jam with it.
'I use technology because jazz music should reflect what is going on in the social climate of the times. In the 60's there was a movement for free jazz so musicians were playing free and now in this period of time we have the internet, we have MP3, we have PC, Macintosh, Bill Gates. So I am utilizing that technology in the music. I think it enhances the music and it actually makes it speak for this time, that is why I do it'.
Courtney Pine says that he uses technology to manipulate his accoustic jazz sounds and that this technology can also enable him to mix different types of sounds such as oriental sounds, Tukish melodies.
'Using technology it is very easy to utilize oriental sounds, Turkish sounds, instruments from distant places and make them fit in terms of what I am doing right now. stated Pine underlining that jazz music had always been about a fusion.
Pine says being interested with Turkish music and that he bought himself several Turkish instruments for learning more about Turkish music.
'I am a student of a student of a student. I am always studying you know, for me I love the sound that they make in Turkey. I just bought some instruments so I am definitely listening and studying, talking to some DJs and hopefully yes in the future I will be able to mix some Turkish style, some melodies. I really like sounds of the instruments.' said the young musician.
