- Story Text: "Gladiator" picked up three nominations -- the most of any film -- as the Screen Actors Guild on Tuesday (January 30) announced contenders for its "Actor" awards, which will be given out on March 11 and are increasingly seen as an important step on the road to the Oscars two weeks later.
While no clear favorite emerged from the nominations some interesting "Only in Hollywood" questions did, including: Can a weapon-wielding survivor of the Roman Empire crush a dirty old French porn writer -- or is the pen really mightier than the sword? "Gladiator's" heartthrob hero, Russell Crowe, is up against Geoffrey Rush, who plays the Marquis de Sade in "Quills," for the award for best performance by a male actor in a leading role. But both men face Hollywood hero Tom Hanks, who won the Golden Globe earlier this month for best actor in a drama for his role in "Castaway."
Also nominated the category are teenager Jamie Bell as the boy ballet dancer in "Billy Elliot" and Benicio Del Toro as the honest cop in "Traffic."
Vying for top female acting honors in the seventh annual SAG awards are Joan Allen, as the politician whose personal life is suspect in "The Contender," Juliette Binoche as the free spirit in "Chocolat," Ellen Burstyn as the mother in "Requiem for a Dream," Laura Linney as the sister in "You Can Count on Me" and Julia Roberts as the crusading legal assistant in "Erin Brockovich," a role for which the superstar has already won a Golden Globe.
Contending for outstanding performance by the cast of a motion picture are "Almost Famous," "Billy Elliot,"
"Chocolat," "Gladiator" and "Traffic."
The SAG "Actors" awards are given out on March 11 and are considered an important indicator of the Oscars which are presented on March 25. The SAG awards are nominations by actors for the best acting of the year in television and films.
Nominated for outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role are two from the cast of "The Contender,"
Jeff Bridges and Gary Oldman. Also nominated are Willem Dafoe, who plays a star-struck vampire in "Shadow of the Vampire,"
Albert Finney the lawyer in "Erin Brockovich" and Joaquin Phoenix, who plays a scheming Roman emperor in "Gladiator."
Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand, both in the rock 'n' roll drama "Almost Famous' were nominated for best supporting performance by an actress in a film. Also nominated were Kate Winslet for "Quills,' Julie Walters for "Billy Elliot" and Judi Dench for "Chocolat."
Dench is also nominated for outstanding performance by a female actor in a television movie or miniseries for her work in "The Last of the Blonde Bombshells." Also nominated for that category are Stockard Channing for "The Truth About Jane," Sally Field for "David Copperfield," Elizabeth Franz for "Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman" and Vanessa Redgrave for "If These Walls Could Talk 2."
Nominated for best actor in a television movie or miniseries are Alec Baldwin and Brian Cox for "Nuremberg,"
Brian Dennehy as Willy Loman in "Death of a Salesman, Danny Glover for "Freedom Song," John Lithgow for "Don Quixote" and James Woods for "Dirty Pictures."
The casts of "Law & Order," "The Practice," "The Sopranos," "The West Wing and "ER" were nominated for best ensemble acting in a drama series.
Nominated for best ensemble acting in a comedy series were the casts of "Ally McBeal," "Frasier," "Friends," "Sex and the City" and "Will & Grace." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
