- Story Text: There was some serious girl power at the Hollywood premiere of "Sugar and Spice," a black comedy about a group of sassy high school cheerleaders who decide they have to rob a bank to help a friend out of a jam.
In "Sugar and Spice", Mena Suvari and Marley Shelton lead a cast of good girls gone bad when head cheerleader Shelton gets pregnant and needs to raise some money to strike out on her own with the captain of the football team, played by James Marsden.
The girls do the only thing a bunch of high school girls short on cash can think of ... they dress up like a cross between Barbie dolls and Wonderwoman and begin a six-girl crime spree.
For Suvari, it's a change of pace from the innocent object of Kevin Spacey's obsessions in "American Beauty", and a welcome one at that.
"That's what I love. She plays tough and I get to swear, you know. It was all fun," said Suvari.
She even got to get into her first on-screen cat fight.
"That was fun. I'd never gotten into a fight like that before. And, learning how to fake it and everything was cool,"
said Suvari.
For 26-year-old Marley Shelton, who looks more than a little like blonde bombshell Heather Graham, it's a chance to make it big on the big screen. And, the chance to have a little fun with a group of up-and-coming actresses.
"I've always considered myself a chick's chick, but the whole cast is amazing," said Shelton.
"We got along so well, which I think is important because when you see our on-screen relationships it's all about loyalty and unity. Like a good cheerleading squad should be."
The comedy's a little dark, but apparently that's what makes a successful teen movie these days. Just look at the success of films like last summer's "Scary Movie" if you need proof.
"I like the kind of sick sense of humour, the Coen brothers sense of humour, in this film. And, I thought it would be fun to do," said James Marsden, the "X-Men" star who plays Shelton's football stud boyfriend in the film.
"Sugar and Spice" opens across North America on January
