- Story Text: Film stars and celebrities are queuing up for Julien
Macdonald and Matthew Williamsons' frocks. Their new
collections have been the most eagerly awaited of London
Fashion Week.
Matthew Williamson and Julien MacDonald's Autumn/Winter
2001/2002 collections have been eagerly awaited, not least by
Madonna, soon-to-be-single Nicole Kidman, and Kylie Minogue.
Williamson toned down his trademark neon colours to show a
subdued collection in reds, golds and creams.
Tuxedo jackets, bow ties and berets gave the collection a
masculine feel, but beading, crochet, lace and sequins made
sure that the pieces did not lose their femininity.
Williamson said that he was showing "a really feminine,
uplifting collection, and a polished collection."
Glamour, glitz and decadence were the themes of Julien
MacDonald's show, entitled "I haven't stopped dancing yet".
The revealing sequinned evening dresses for which
MacDonald has become known were shown alongside more
traditional tailored pieces. A tuxedo trouser suit recalled
the classic Yves St Laurent "Le Smoking" dinner suit of the
1970s.
The highlights of the show were the more outlandish
pieces; a jacket and hat in the pattern of the British Union
Jack flag and a black dress with arms made from spiky pieces
of red and black plastic.
Julien MacDonald graduated from the Royal College of Art
in 1996 and began his company in 1997. He has recently
designed a capsule collection for British chain-store Marks
and Spencer.
