- Story Text: Photographs of Marilyn Monroe posing nude are set to go up for auction to the highest bidder. The infamous "Red Velvet Series" helped launched the career of the Hollywood pop icon.
In 1949 she was paid fifty dollars to pose naked for the photos, now these images could fetch up to a million dollars. According to conservative estimates, that's the sum the "Red Velvet Series" could bring in.
Not only do the images go to the highest bidder but also the intellectual property rights are up for grabs. The highest bidder will own the copyright to the famous photos.
The auction is scheduled to be held at Butterfield's in Los Angeles on March 22 with real-time bidding via the Internet.
The series, shot by Tom Kelley, an Associated Press photographer who also did advertising work from his Los Angeles Studio, were captured on film in 1949. This was a transitional period for Marilyn Monroe. She had been divorced from her first husband James Dougherty for nearly three years and had begun and ended contacts with as many film studios. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
