- Story Text: The American Museum of the Moving Image honored Oscar nominee Julia Roberts with an awards dinner and celebrity tribute that included George Clooney, Rupert Everett and many others.
It was a night film star Julia Roberts is not likely to forget for a very long time as some of the best known names in Hollywood and around the globe came out to pay tribute to her, her career and her films.
New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel was filled with photographers hungry for a shot of Roberts and her boyfriend Benjamin Bratt as they arrived holding tightly onto each other.
One reporter asked Ms. Roberts if she was happy that her new film, "The Mexican," was number one at the box office.
Roberts response was,
"It's always nice when it happens, I mean it's not a relief it's not, to me it doesn't have anything to do with the value of the movie itself to me, so it's nice though."
Roberts took time out to pose for pictures with the director of "Erin Brokovich", Steven Soderbergh.
Roberts has already won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her performance in the film and is heavily favored to win the Academy Award later this month. Soderbergh has been nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for best director for two films, "Erin Brokovich" and "Traffic."
Dermit Mulrooney co-starred with Julia Roberts in, "My Best Friend's Wedding." He spoke about the first time he met her, " I remember auditioning for the movie and just the moment I laid eyes on her she lights up a room you know you've seen it on film all the time every part she's ever played she just jumps off the screen and she's like that in real life and she's just got such incredibly attractive personality."
Other stars that came out to pay tribute to Roberts that have also worked on films with her included, Rupert Everett who was also in,"My Best Friend's Wedding," Susan Sarandon who starred with Roberts in "Stepmom" and Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon's husband who worked with Roberts in a film directed by Robert Altman.
George Clooney said of Roberts, "She is a movie star, she is a consummate actress, she's a great beauty and she's a great girl." And James Gandolfini who stars with Roberts in her current release, "The Mexican" said
"In this business she is one of the good ones and will always be, I think, she's learned what's important and what matters and the right way to do things."
Julia Roberts is only the sixteenth recipient of The American Museum of the Moving Image Award. She joins a very prestigious list that includes, James Stewart, Robert DeNiro, Tom Hanks and Martin Scorsese just to name a few.
In her acceptance speech Roberts said that she is "Proof positive that anything is possible in your life because you know...I am just a girl from Smyrna Georgia who wanted to be in movies and get a certain amount of attention." She humbly went on saying, " This is too much attention, for the record, I just wanted that much attention, tonight, too much but normally it's just enough."
Roberts is currently working on a film called "Oceans Eleven" that is directed by Steven Soderbergh. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
