- Story Text: Two million dollars (U.S.) are expected to be raised on Tuesday (March 6) when Actor Liam Neeson and Unicef put movie memorabilia up for auction at Sotheby's in New York for AIDS children in Africa.
Over 100 items from Hollywood celebrities will be auctioned off at Sotheby's in New York on Tuesday(March 6th).
Organised by actor Liam Neeson and Unicef Ireland, the money will be donated to buy drugs to combat babies born with the AIDS virus in Africa.
Maura Quinn, President of UNICEF in Ireland, has been working on the project "Movie Action for children" for over a year. "The reality it is for women in Africa and people in Africa who have the virus is a death sentence. So what we are now trying to ensure is that there babies are now born safe of the virus and it is really going to make a huge difference. I mean the kids are literally going to be born and have a chance to grow up."
Some of the highlighted items that were donated by the movie industry include the lightsaber used by Liam Neeson in "Star Wars: the Phantom Menace", Mel Gibson's sword from "Braveheart," Catherine Zeta Jones' stunning costume from "The Mask of Zorro," the bullwhip used by Harrison Ford in all three "Indiana Jones" adventures , and Julia Roberts wedding dress from "The Runaway Bride."
Quinn is excited about the auction next week. "We have items here from actors and actresses like Lauren Bacall, the family of the late Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck down to actors and actresses like Julia Roberts who would be on the "A" list of the current community of Hollywood people so it has been a huge response."
Also on the auction block will be a lounge chair from the movie "Titanic," and glasses from the musical star Bono that were in used in the Grammy award winning song "It's a beautiful day."
Sotheby's has generously agreed to waive their commission for both the live and on line auctions.
