- Story Text: Salia Sanou and Seydou Boro, choreographers of the modern dance company "Salia Ni Seydou" bring modern African dance to American stages, as part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music's
"Black Dance Festival." Hailing from Burkina Faso, the dance, named "Taagala" provides a compelling voice for modern African Dance.
Two talented choreographers, Salia Sanou and Seydou Boro, both from Burkina Faso, have bought their particular brand of modern African dance to the American stage.
The company performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Harvey Theater as part of "Black Dance - Tradition and Transformation", an exclusive U.S engagement. The show has been jointly produced by 11 cultural organizations in Europe, Africa and the United States They will continue to tour around the world, taking their haunted modern dance ritual which is called "Taagala,"
through Europe.
"Taagala" is about moving around, travelling to different places, leaving known locations behind and embarking on a journey.
"I think that the theme of travelling is something everyone can relate to. When you talk about travelling it's a physical state that sometimes isn't wanted, for instance in wars people travel although they don't necessarily intend to but because of the war they do travel. And there are other times when people are happy to travel. You can see that in countries like Bosnia as well as Africa. This was a theme we were attracted to and we are expressing it our way. It's nothing that only affects Africa it's very open.I think we give out ideas and the audience is involved in the artistic expression of the theme", says Seydou Boro.
"The wish of all artists to have their work being seen by a lot of people and a lot of countries and they have toured a lot all over Europe and will take this piece to other countries in the near future."Salia Sanou.
The movements embody the modern elements of African dance, but there are strains of tradition evident in the passages.
The movements are often abrupt and mystical, all making for a performance that's spellbinding to audiences. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
