- Story Text: Robbie Williams was crowned undisputed king of the Brits when he took a hat-trick of awards and pulled off the night's most spectacular show.
Robbie Williams cemented his position as king of British pop when he won three prizes at the country's biggest annual music awards show on Monday (February 26).
The former singer with boy band Take That was the star of the night at the Brits, Britain's equivalent of the Grammys.
He won the coveted award for Best British Male Solo Artist, beating Badly Drawn Boy, teen crooner Craig David, David Gray and DJ Norman Cook aka "Fatboy Slim" His song "Rock DJ" took the Best British Single and Best British Video honours.
Williams has now won a record 12 Brit awards -- eight as a solo artist and four with Take That -- way ahead of his nearest rival Annie Lennox who has seven.
Presenting him with the award for Best British Male Artist was a sultry-looking Geri Halliwell.
The award for Best British Female Artist went to Sonique Best British Group and Best British Album went to Coldplay after their meteoric rise to the top of the charts last year with their massive-selling hit, 'Parachutes'.
Elton John presented controversial U.S. rapper Eminem with the Best International Male Artist prize at Britain's biggest annual pop music awards ceremony on Monday.
Eminem, dressed in trademark bluejean overalls and ice hockey mask and carrying a chainsaw, received a huge standing ovation when he sang his hit single "The Real Slim Shady".
"And the winner is...Steely Dan," Eminem said in a mock reference to losing last week's Grammy award for Album of the Year to music veterans Steely Dan.
Speaking after the show, Elton said he thought it was the best Brits to date - boosted by the live vocals - and it favoured well over the Grammies.
Madonna, the material girl who grew up to become the undisputed queen of pop, has finally got her Brit crown, 14 years after first being nominated for an award, taking the title of Best International Female Solo Artist.
The Brits, infamous for acts of drink-inspired silliness and bold political protests, passed off this year without a hint of either.
Westlife won Best Pop Act while another boy band, A1, were voted Best British Newcomer.
However, Fatboy Slim did take the award for Best British Dance Act.
Williams also won the award for Best British Single for his hit "Rock DJ". This is the sixth time the British star has scooped the award. The video for "Rock DJ" was voted Best British Video.
Kelis beat off competition from Pink and Westlife to win Best International Newcomer and Best Soundtrack went to "American Beauty".
Irish rock superstars U2 were voted Best International Group and collected an award for their Outstanding Contribution to music, crowning a phenomenal quarter of a century in show business.
Last week U2 won the Grammy for the Record of the Year for their hit single "Beautiful Day". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
