- Story Text: Fancy a bit of hip hop, breakdance, swing, tap and boogaloo? Then "Bounce" is your thing. Opening in North London's Roundhouse this Wednesday "Bounce" brings its exciting array of dance styles to UK audiences. It's already hugely successful in Sweden and don't think it's only for hard-core clubbers - everyone from 9 to 99 gets a buzz out of it.
The urban street has long been at the root of popular culture and "Bounce" takes this to the next step. The show pushes the boundaries of modern theatre and dance by celebrating the powerful vitality and influence of the street in a thrilling spectacle.
"The biggest part of the show is choreographed. I don't know how much - ninety per cent - but then there is -- some of it like we have two breakers -they ususally just omprovise everything they do on stage.. but I think we have some parts in the show where we are allowed to improvised, in the beginning of the show and it's also to make it more fun for us since we're gonna do 7 - 8 shows a week so we have something to get loose", says Bounce dancer Sandra.
"Bounce" is devised and choreographed by the Bounce Streetdance Company which was formed in 1997 and has since enlisted the best international talent. Bounce now comprises 16 dancers whose skill, passion and raw energy bring the soul of the street to the stage.
Directed by Anthony van Laast (Mamma Mia, Whistle Down the Wind, Joseph), each cast member takes their own individual and innovative style to the show.
"This is our thing you know, that's why we started Bounce because we felt that we have something to give, it's fun to do something that you like. There's like no limits and you can do whatever, if you feel like trying out something you can do it without someone else saying 'you're not allowed to do that' or you should have these kind of pants on or whatever", say David and Ambra.
After a huge success in Stockholm, Bounce are now coming to London's Roundhouse for a limited eight-week season. It's a theatrical experience for anyone who has ever tapped their feet to a beat.
"We don't have such a big dance crowd in Sweden, a lot of regular people came and the feeling was like a derby between Chelsey and Tottenham you know, we had a great time, we're spoiled now. You could see little kids in the audience, grandma and grandpa, a lot of the nights it was just like 'did you see the people on the second row'...it was really nice to have a mixture...families I don't think we have a dance crowd like dancers and the ususal theatre goers...We have them too but not only so it's really fun like you said, we have the greatest audience. We're excited to be here, we don't expect anything but we hope it's gonna be a nice crowd here too."
