- Story Text: Alex (William H. Macy) is going through a mid-life crisis: he has a wife (Tracy Ullman) he can't talk to. He has a six-year old son (David Dorfman) he's devoted to but worried about. He also has a hateful job working for his overbearing father, Michael (Donald Sutherland), in the family business.
The family business is contract murder and Alex is forbidden from discussing his job with his wife and son, who believe he sells mail-order lawn ornaments.
Melancholy, repressed and desperate to extricate himself from his father and equally venal mother. Alex seeks out a sympathetic therapist for relief. Unexpectedly, he finds solace and liberation in the waiting room, where he meets a confused young beautician named Sarah (Neve Campbell).
"It was such a wonderful combination of a pedestrian life and an amazing life sandwiched in this fellow. I've always been attracted to people who are so stoical," Macy said.
Drawn to her spark, Alex embarks on a quest for approval, forgiveness and redemption. With a love affair and possible family betrayal, looming on the horizon, Alex's secret rebellion dent the controlled surfaces of his compartmentalised life, forcing him, at last, into once final, heart-wrenching choice. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
