- Story Text: Becky Taylor, a twelve year old schoolgirl from Guildford near London, has stunned the music world by being signed up to EMI Classics...at the tender age of only 12.
The soprano releases her first single "Song of Dreams"
on June 4th, and her first album "A Dream Come True" exactly a week later.
Becky performed her first public showcase of songs at a central London hotel, and won hearty applause for her three song set, singing to a pre-recorded accompaniment.
The soprano's first major live performance took place at a special venue, the Royal Albert Hall in London. She sang "Once Upon a December" from the Disney movie, "Anastasia". The charity event was held for the Farm Aid appeal, set up to provide funds for British farmers, many of whom had been badly affected by the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Becky's performance was praised by Prince Charles who said he would "follow her career with great interest".
Becky's musical and performance background began at the age of seven, when she starred in the hit West End show, "Les Miserables." Two years later she won the British Arts Award final for her dancing in "The Secret Garden". Her ambition is to play Christine in "Phantom of the Opera."
The debut album, "A Dream Come True", features Becky's favourite songs from musicals and films and includes classics such as "I Could Have Danced All Night" from "My Fair Lady"; "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" and "Just Beyond the Stars" from "Peter Pan".
Becky Taylor has been described as the "new" Charlotte Church. It's a comparison she rejects, although she is full of praise for Charlotte, the Welsh 15-year-old who is already worth £10 m. Becky says : "I admire Charlotte Church immensely but our voices are very different." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
