- Story Text: World famous composer Phillip Glass has realized a dream with his symphony for the 'kettle drum'. Normally relegated to the back of the orchestra Glass explores a new field for the timpani, by placing them in the front of the Orchestra, expecting the Timpani to provide the melody.
World famous composer Phillip Glass's "Concerto Fantasy" is an exhilarating explosion of primitive energy, with plenty of cross rhythms, and repetitive patterns.
But what's unusual about this orchestra is the exploration of the "Timpani" or kettle drums that creates a snappy sound and boogie beat.
In Glass's Timpani concerto, performed at New York's famed Carnegie Hall, he explores a whole new musical language, taking percussion to an incredible level. He is the first ever composer to use the
"double Timpani, which provides incredible power to an orchestra.
After a dozen or so operas, lots of film music, reams of solo piano and orchestral scores, Phillip Glass feels he's found his real calling, the Timpani Concerto.
Timpanists usually occupy the back end of an orchestra, but Glass is working on changing its position, bringing them to the front of the orchestra.
Timpanists not only bring the much needed melody and harmony to an orchestra, but also a power and thunder that completes a musical piece.
And with the completion of this U.S concert tour, the world renowned Phillip Glass plans to start to work on his next ground breaking Timpani concerto. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
