- Story Text: Fresh from the release of their latest single "So Fresh So Clean", 'supa-cool' hip hop duo Outkast are on tour, cleaning up the currently stale hip hop scene. Reuters caught up with Big Boi and Andre 3000 at their recent show in London.
After the hugely successful "Miss Jackson", hip hop duo Outkast are back with what they do best - mixing razor sharp raps with pure funk chorus - a breath of fresh air in the currently stale hip hop scene.
The duo from Atlanta have recently sold over 5 million copies of their Grammy-nominated fourth album "Stankonia" and are taking their fast-moving live acts on tour in Europe. The enthusiasm and style OutKast put into their performance is amazing.
From the four dancers to the sublime soul backing vocals, nothing is left to chance. The interaction between the duo is finely honed - putting some spirit back into hip hop.
"The current hip hop scene, erverybody got their little camps and crews, making music and stuff - you got a couple of producers that are really just keeping the beats alive - there's a couple of artists out there that sound like they're hungry. But we just really try to do our thing , we've been doing it since day one. We just go in there how we feel, we experiment", says Big Boi.
Everyone knows Outkast in the U.S., in Europe they still have some way to go.
"We hooked up back at high school. Almost 9, 10 years ago. We had a vision - both of us in the music, wahtever. We chose names just looking in the dictionary , we wanted something totally opposite of everything else. We wanted to have our own thing. First we had names like Misfits, our first name was ...(unclear)...but someone stole it, but then we saw Outkast and it just fit perfectly so we took the pronounciation, spelt it and we use it."
