  • Story Text: 17 years after "Ghostbusters" cemented his reputation as one of Hollywood's premiere comedy filmmakers, director Ivan Reitman joined cast members David Duchovny and Julianne Moore at the World Premiere of "Evolution" on Friday, June 1 in Los Angeles.
    Just like in "Ghostbusters," "Evolution" is the story of a team of wisecracking would-be scientists who are confronted with an otherworldly threat to the human race.
    Instead of ghosts, these characters are alien-busters.
    When Reitman first read the script for "Evolution," it was a serious science fiction thriller. But he decided to put his own spin on the story, and use his "comedic vocabulary" to set it apart from all the other movies in that genre.
    David Duchovny and Orlando Jones play a couple of Arizona community college professors and part-time geologists who stumble upon a meteor fragment in the Arizona desert. When the rock starts "bleeding" and life grows from it, they become convinced they've discovered life from outer space.
    Soon, that life has replicated and threatens to take over the entire state of Arizona, the United States and the entire world. They hook up with a clutzy government scientist played by Oscar nominee Julianne Moore and a dim-witted slacker played by Seann William Scott to find a way to wipe the unwanted critters off the planet before they destroy it.
    As he has in his previously movies, Reitman mixed experienced comics like Orlando Jones with actors not previously known for their humour, like Duchovny and Moore.
    Although both actors have played in light-hearted material before, this is by far their broadest comedic work to date.
    While the comedy was important to Reitman, he also wanted to make the film true to the sci-fi genre, which meant a lot of computer generated special effects and loads of animatronic and latex monsters.
    "Evolution" opens in theatres throughout the United States on Friday, June 8.
