  • Story Text: Awards shows are a dime a dozen in Hollywood, but the MTV Movie Awards presentation has managed to carve out an identity of its own. Up-and-coming stars from music, television and cinema made a big splash at this year's show, where movie stars lined up to receive accolades in some unusual categories including "Best Action Sequence," "Best Villain" and "Best Kiss."
    Irreverent fun and wacky antics took center stage at the taping of the 2001 MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday. The show is scheduled at the tail end of the yearly awards season and typically offers both performers and presenters a chance to blow off steam. Hosts Jimmy Fallon and Kirsten Dunst jumped right into the fray with a spirited send-up of Madonna's hit music video "Don't Tell Me." Not to be outdone, co-presenters Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan made a dramatic entrance as they dangled from wires, mock-fighting.
    MTV has long paved its own path when it comes to Hollywood awards shows, in part due to its unique choice of categories.
    This year's presentation saw Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas take home an award for Best Kiss, Jim Carrey decorated for Best Villain and Zhang Ziyi honored for Best Fight Scene.
    More traditional categories included Best Actor (Tom Cruise), Best Actress (Julia Roberts) and Best Movie (Gladiator).
    Still, for many young stars, the MTV Movie Awards provides a welcome opportunity to bond with their young audience.
    Cameron Diaz put it perfectly as she accepted her award for 'Best Dance Sequence,' saying: "I appreciate you guys watching me shake my ass. I'm blond, I shake my ass and I make funny faces. Isn't Hollywood crazy?"
    The 2001 MTV Movie Awards debut in North America on June 7.
