- Story Text: Rock and roll legend and founding member of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, made an appearance at New York record store to sign his newly released CD and reach out to some of his adoring fans.
Few American bands have had the kind impact that the Beach Boys had on American music and culture. The driving force behind the music and the spirit of the band was undoubtedly, Brian Wilson. Wilson appeared at one of New York's best known music stores, Tower records, to promote the release of his new CD, "Live at the Roxy," an CD recorded at the famed Roxy in Hollywood.
When asked how he enjoys playing without the Beach Boys, Wilson replied, "It just sounds better to me, I have a better time with it."
He went on to say,
"I miss being with Mike Love but other than that I like doing it on my own."
Wilson will be playing in support of his new CD in Japan this fall but has no other plans to tour soon. He was accompanied at Tower Records by his four and a half year old daughter, Dari, one of two young girls by his current wife.
A major tribute was recorded at New York city's Radio City Music Hall back in March. For anyone who doubts the impact Wilson had on rock and roll today, one only has to look at the lineup of stars who appeared at the tribute: Elton John, Billy Joel, Paul Simon and the Go-Go's just to name a few.
Wilson has suffered from a number of health problems over the years. When asked what motivated him to come out and reach out to his fans, Wilson said enthusiastically,
"It's a thrill for me the whole trip is a thrill, I'm telling you that, it's a thrill!" When he was asked if he has enjoyed the fans over the years? Wilson said, "Oh God yes, of course, yes, yes."
For one fan, Lisa Musalam, Wilson is a role model for those who want to overcome their problems, "The thing about Brian Wilson is that he doesn't give up and he's come back and I think that says a lot and inspires a lot of people whether artists or just people in general for what he's been through and how far he's come."
For another fan, Wilson's music stands far and away the most memorable of all living legacies, "The songs are just so memorable, I can still play these songs today this is the year 2001 and I've been playing them since 1964, 1965 and you can't get tired of them, unbelievable how long these can go on for," said Brian Gari.
Although Wilson lacks the youthful glow of a Beach Boy today, his songs live on, he continues to perform and record music and his fans continue to show up out of a devotion that most musicians can only dream of from their fans. He already has one grown daughter from a previous marriage, Carnie Wilson who has gone to musical stardom as a member of Wilson Phillips. One can only hope he will live to see his daughter Dari, follow in his footsteps as well. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
