- Story Text: One of the world's best loved and best known musicals, My Fair Lady has long been an audience favourite, and the latest London production starring Martine McCutcheon, Jonathan Pryce and Dennis Waterman is no exception. Last night saw it's first performance in the West End at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
After a four month run at the Royal National Theatre, My Fair Lady has returned tot he West End. The dazzling new production has attracted as much attention for the frequent absences of it's leading lady, Martine McCutcheon, due to illness, as for it's brilliant staging and wonderful performances.
Disaster was narrowly avoided at last night's West End opening after a technical problem meant that the show was delayed for an hour and the first act was performed without a large part of the mechanical scene changes. But in true theatre tradition - the show must go on - the cast turned out dazzling performances.
Martine McCutcheon, best known from the British TV Soap Eastenders said that the role was a dream come true and Dennis Waterman, playing her father Alfred Doolittle praised the cast and particularly the work of choreographer Matthew Bourne who's lively staging brought an extra dimention to the well-known musical set pieces.
McCutcheon is under doctors orders to scale down her performances from eight shows a week to six, after missing half of the shows during the pre-West End run.
The show has already chalked up £10 million in advance box office sales, and looks set to become one of the hottest tickets in London. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
