- Story Text: Sharon Stone's husband was recovering on Monday (June 11) after being attacked by a 7-foot Komodo Dragon at the Los Angeles Zoo during a private tour arranged by Stone.
Phil Bronstein, editor of the San Francisco Chronicle daily newspaper, and husband of the "Basic Instinct"
star, was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center on Saturday after the reptile bit his foot, crushing his toe and tendons.
The attack took place during a tour arranged by Stone.
At the hospital, doctors had to reattach severed tendons and rebuild the casing of his big toe .Stone has not left his side all weekend, according to a spokesperson for the star.
The dragon's teeth harbor septic bacteria, so Bronstein is also being treated with antibiotics and was to be monitored for possible infection.
Cedars Sinai officials were not immediately available for comment on Monday.
The animal, a rare Indonesian species of monitor lizard, attacked while Bronstein and a zookeeper were in its cage on a behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo arranged by Stone as an early Father's Day gift.
The zoo sometimes gives private tours to celebrities or major donors who want to avoid attracting public attention.
Bronstein was shoeless at the time, according to reports.
He had been wearing white tennis shoes but because the dragon is fed white rats, the zookeeper suggested he remove them so the dragon did not mistake them for its next meal.
The dragon, which has serrated teeth used for ripping flesh, clamped down on Bronstein's foot and thrashed around.
Bronstein allegedly grabbed the jaws of the reptile and pried them open before escaping through the small feeding door of the cage while the zookeeper fended off the dragon.
According to zoo officials, the dragon, which has been quarantined, was four years old and was usually mild-tempered. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
