- Story Text: Paul McCartney made an appearance at a New York bookstore on Monday to promote his new book, "Blackbird Singing - Poems and Lyrics, 1965-1999."
On Monday (June 11), outside of one New York's largest and most popular bookstores a huge crowd gathered to see one man who hasn't had a hit song in more than a decade. He also isn't releasing a new album nor announcing an upcoming tour.
Instead, one of the world's most beloved musicians is releasing a book of brand new poetry and incredibly familiar lyrics. The man is Paul McCartney and the book is "Blackbird Singing - Poems and Lyrics, 1965-1999."
Paul McCartney is the singer songwriter of the Beatles that so many people idealize in what can only be called the most influential rock and roll band of all time.
The Beatles broke new ground with their music and their lyrics. Now, almost 40 years after the Beatles crashed onto the world of popular music and popular culture, the man responsible for so much of their success is still drawing huge crowds wherever he goes.
For many their people, their memories of McCartney are entrenched in their childhood, "Oh well my gosh I just remember you know getting permission to say up late to see him on the Ed Sullivan show and of course now, you know if we can get our kids to bed that early we're lucky but so it goes way back with me, so it's just tremendous," said Rick Nelson a long time Beatles fan.
When McCartney was asked about using poetry as outlet for his thoughts, dreams and frustrations he said, "Yeah it's an interesting thing because I done that kind of thing through my songs but when a friend of mine called Ivan died quite a few years ago I suddenly felt like writing a poem and since then, you know I've done a bit of that which has culminated in a book, it's a slightly different experience but kind of similar to writing songs." His wife Linda Eastman is said to have supported his pursuit of poetry in the last few years of her life which ended due to cancer in 1998.
The book is divided into nine sections, some exploring a particular emotion and others linked by personal history. Among the broader themes explored are: love, loss, memory and social activism. There are poems that deal with his childhood like, "In Liverpool" and "Dinner Tickets." For McCartney, the book is another milestone in his life, "This book stands high on my list of accomplishments I enjoy it, I love doing it and people seem to like it so that's great for me."
McCartney and has had tremendous success over the last year with their collection of number one songs entitled, "One,"
topping the charts around the world. He has also just released a collection of 40 of his band, "Wings"songs that has also been a hot seller.
For many fans like Brandon Smith, there is only Paul McCartney, "The" Beatle,
"I mean it's Paul McCartney you know, somebody who has touched the lives of so many people and to meet him and have just that moment of personal contact with him is pretty special, it's very cool."
Paul McCartney is unquestionably one if the most influential creative forces of the late 20th century, inspiring generations of writers, lyricists, activists and writers. His direction now as a poet is not far from what we know him as and one can only expect the best at whatever he does. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
