- Story Text: Enduring boy band N*Sync released their new album, "Celebrity" on Monday (July 23, 2001) at midnight and celebrated with a record release party in Los Angeles with plenty of celebrity friends in tow. The group later capped off the media blitz with a concert for their legions of fans.
While critics have been beating their drums about the ever imminent demise of the boy band phenomena, N*SYNC has chimed in with its latest album, "Celebrity," which arrived in stores early Tuesday. The group has set out to downplay its original appeal, choosing a stylistic departure that features less soulful crooning and more of a hip hop, edgier sound.
A risky choice that so far has not propelled the first single from the album, "Pop," into an instant hit. The quintet now has pressure on it to match the success of their last CD, "No Strings Attached," which sold a record 2.4 million copies in its first week.
In an effort to generate excitement for the boys, their record label, Jive, threw a launch party for "Celebrity,"
studding the invite list with the requisite celebrities. Among those showing up included Britney Spears, band member Justin Timberlake's girlfriend of record; Jennifer Love Hewitt, Welsh songbird Charlotte Church, and Hugh Hefner and several of his bunnies were also on hand. The band members were there to sell their new product.
"We get so many questions about how do you compare this to the last album," said Timberlake. "I can't compare it at all to the last album because it's a totally different album and I really feel like it's us on this record, so we're really proud of it no matter what."
The group capped off their Los Angeles stop with an outdoor concert at the Rose Bowl arena, more naturally a setting for sporting combat than screaming girls.
