- Story Text: Stars of stage and screen gathered at the world famous music venue the Hollywood Bowl, for the second annual Bowl of Fame induction ceremony. English comic act, Monty Python, Opera singer Marilyn Horne, music legend Stevie Wonder and father and daughter John and Bonnie Raitt were those honoured in this year's glittering ceremony.
Thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at the historic Hollywood Bowl to mark the opening of the venue's 80th season and to honour this year's inductees into the 'Bowl of Fame'.
Drawn from the diverse arena of musical entertainment including classical, pop, jazz, musical theatre, film composition and dance, the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame honorees receive their tributes each summer part of the Bowl's opening night celebrations.
Kevin Spacey opened the evening.. taking time to honour his dear friend actor and comedian Jack Lemmon who had passed away just two days earlier.
First to receive her award was opera star Marilyn Horne, who has a 50 year history with the Hollywood Bowl. The mezzo-soprano has performed around the world with some of opera's leading names, including Luciano Pavarotti, who joined the ceremony live by satellite.
Father and daughter John and Bonnie Raitt made history by being inducted together, they said the award had extra special meaning to them both as the Hollywood Bowl has played such an important role in their lives.
Bonnie is a singer, songwriter and guitarist who has enjoyed 20 years at the top, combining blues, R&B, rock and pop. She has already been awarded nine Grammy's and is currently working on her 16th album.
Her father John Raitt has enjoyed an equally salubrious career stretching more than half a decade. The Broadway star made his debut in 1945 and has entertained audiences across the country ever since with performances in shows such as Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun and The Pajama Game.
Perhaps the most 'unconventional' of the inductees was the British satirical review Monty Python. Eric Idle accepted the award on behalf of the six members, he thanked the largely American audience for understanding Monty Python and their 'unique' sense of humour. Idle also performed some of the group's better known songs to the delighted audience.
The last inductee was music legend Stevie Wonder. The artist who began recording at the age of 11 has amassed numerous wards throughout his career but still rates this as one of the best.
The inductees were joined by a number of other celebrities, Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey all taking part in the evening. Jeff Bridges was especially delighted to present his high school friend Bonnie with her award and talked about his new album which he is planning to release soon.
All proceeds from the event went towards 'Music Matters', the children's education programs of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
