- Story Text: One of the summer's most highly-anticipated comedies "Scary Movie 2" took a bow on Monday, July 2 in Los Angeles.
Writer/director Keenan Ivory Wayans and his writing/acting collaborator siblings Shawn and Marlon were among the guests.
Less than a year after its predecessor stormed the box office with a 42 million dollar opening, "Scary Movie 2" hits theaters this week, complete with gross-out gags, loads of scatological humor and spoofs of supernatural films from "The Exorcist" to "Poltergeist" to "Hannibal."
Once again, Keenan Ivory Wayans is in the director's chair, while his brothers Shawn and Marlon share writing and acting credits. Other returning cast members from the original include Anna Faris and Regina Hall.
The first film, which went on to earn more than 150 million dollars in the U.S. alone, was such a surprise hit, that executives at Miramax Films, the studio releasing the film, asked the Wayans brothers to write and produce a sequel in record time. They gave them a deadline of July 4th, 2001.
With that date now upon us, the Wayans have delivered a parody of supernatural thrillers, rather than a take-off of teen slasher movies, as the first movie was. It includes a pre-credit opening sequence that spoofs "The Exorcist," with James Woods as the Exorcist and Natasha Lyonne as the possessed girl.
Also new to the cast are Chris Elliott as a hideously disfigured butler, Tim Curry as a mad professor, David Cross as his overly-eager wheelchair-bound assistant, Tori Spelling as a coed with a compulsive personality and Chris Masterson as a college student who spends a night in a haunted mansion.
"Scary Movie 2" opens in theaters throughout the United States on Wednesday, July 4. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
