- Story Text: Antonio Banderas and writer-director Robert Rodriguez teamed up again for another western 'shoot-em up' to be filmed in San Miguel Allende in Mexico. The two previously worked together on the western "Desperado."
"Once Upon a Time in Mexico,' which began filming in May, is the third of Rodriguez' spaghetti western homages, after 1992's "El Mariachi" and "Desperado."
"I think Hollywood will see that it is possible to make films with less violence and still make money. And the public will like them," Rodriguez said at a news conference.
Spanish actor Banderas stars in the film along with Salma Hayek as his love interest.
"Robert Rodriguez is getting at the pure heart of the action film - and trying to avoid what has been before. If some one goes to the movie thinking he's going to see Ingmar Bergman- that is not what he is going to see," Banderas said of the film.
"Once Upon a Time in Mexico" is loosely based on Italian director Sergio Leone's western epic, "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
