- Story Text: Rap groups from several countries, including the United States, have performed in Havana during its Festival of Cuban Rap.
The frenetic rhythm of rap replaced the Latin beats of salsa for a few days in Havana during Cuba's popular Rap Festival that ran August 17 through 19.
Rappers from Mexico, Spain, the United States, Peru, Venezuela, Canada and Brazil descended upon the island to perform at the Alamar Theatre on the outskirts of Havana for thousands of young fans.
Missing from the lineup was the internationally acclaimed Cuban group Orishas. Fans had to be satisfied with video clips of the group projected on a screen.
The festival's kickoff concert lasted until dawn as Cuban and Spanish rappers performed for thousands of enthusiastic die-hard rap fans.
American rap group, Micronauts, said the had "invited themselves" to the event.
"Basically we invited ourselves. We heard about it and wanted to come and perform here in Cuba. We took it upon ourselves to make it happen and do the show," said one member of the group.
The event was sponsored by the Association of Saiz Brothers, the Cuban Institute of Music and the Ministry of Culture, who organized a panel discussion with musicologists, researchers and local critics, as well as two experts from the Universities of Chicago and Texas in the United States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
