- Story Text: An extravagant necklace created for Nicole Kidman's starring role in "Moulin Rouge" could fetch as much as one million US dollars when it is sold by Christie's in New York in October.
A necklace, worn by movie star Nicole Kidman, is expected to be the star of Christie's autumn jewellery sale in New York. Kidman wore the extravagant neckpiece in Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge".
Simon Teakle, head of jewellery department at Christie's said that the piece is appealing on several levels.
Teakle said, "To start with, you have an extraordinary piece of jewellery. Then, once you combine the association of Nicole Kidman and Hollywood and the film Moulin Rouge, its got a lot of romance and I think a lot of sex appeal that makes it very interesting."
With an estimate of $700,000 to $1,000,000, the neckpiece was created with 1,308 diamonds totalling over 137 carats along an intricate framework fashioned in the spirit of the "Moulin Rouge" era style by Australian jewellery designer Stefano Canturi.
The neckpiece was named after the character for whom the piece was created for.
"Satine" is regarded by some as the most valuable piece of jewellery ever designed and created to feature in a motion picture. Taking four months to complete, the neckpiece flows from the height of the neck on to the décolletage, the diamonds resting within an intricate framework.
After one month of research, Canturi abandoned modern workshop methods and utilized 100-year-old techniques to create the necklace. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
