- Story Text: 3 Doors Down are one of the hottest new bands to come out of the States in the last year. Their first album 'The Better Life' became the fastest selling debut album in US history when it was released last year and its first single release 'Kryptonite' was an instant summer hit. Now the band are preparing their next album and are about to release their next European single from the first, entitled 'Be Like That' which features on the soundtrack of the newly released film 'American Pie 2'.
3 Doors Down are a difficult band to place; they have been described as anything from alternative to Hard Rock or Heavy Metal, but the four piece band from Escatawpa Mississippi are content to describe their music as good old Rock n' Roll that they never believed would be popular the world over.
"We hoped for regional success from where we're from in Mississippi and we thought maybe we'd do well in Mississippi cos we're from there, we'd do well in New Orleans Louisiana, but we never thought world-wide, we never thought Germany, we never thought Switzerland, we never thought Holland and Australia. It didn't even enter our minds. And all of a sudden one day they said your records doing well in Germany and we need to go to Germany. Here we are, but we never expected it."
The band, all friends, began playing together in the late nineties and cut their first private CD in 1997 to sell at private gigs. The CD generated such interest that record companies were soon fighting to sign the band. After the success of their debut album the final touches are being put to album two, which the group hopes will reflect what they have learned from the past year.
"Well he's just grown mentally and physically (lead singer Brad Arnold), he's become a hell of a front man, his writing you know is going to be greater on this next record, because he's seen more, he's done more, he's experienced more. It just comes from experiences on the road you know and I just there is going to be a lot of good stuff come out of him."
The group launched the debut single with the hit single 'Kryptonite'; they are now hoping to repeat that success with the latest single release 'Be Like That' which features on the soundtrack of the film 'American Pie 2' and which promises to be a big hit.
"American Pie 2 is supposed to be even funnier than American Pie 1, so you know that is going to be a classic. I heard it was funny, but I haven't seen it yet, we've been to busy to it, but our song being on it, our song being like part of the movie, not just the soundtrack, but when you watch the movie, you can hear the song as well in one of the main scenes, that means a lot. The way it came about is that it is a Universal picture we are in a Universal record company and we are also Universal publishing. So our people knew their people, our people already knew their people. So it was kinda something that was going to happen. The American Pie film people wanted the song and they asked for it and they got it. It just kind of fit man."
The band who have endured a gruelling tour schedule over the last year are looking forward to getting back soon in the studio to put the finishing touches to the new album which has no set release date here in Europe.
