- Story Text: The star of the hugely successful Atlanta-based threesome, TLC, has decided to go it alone. Audiences in Britain will get a taste of the solo Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes when her debut album, Supernova, is released next month.
She's best remembered for her aggressive on-point rapping and singing that helped the Atlanta-based threesome sell more than 20 million records.... that and being arrested for burning down the house of her boyfriend, NFL Falcon star Andre Rison. Now Lisa Left Eye Lopes is going it alone. "I'm going through a major transformation period right now. And I'm not Left Eye anymore - I'm only Left Eye with TLC - I'm Supernova! I got to find a way to separate myself from the group. So next time you guys see me I won't be me!"
Born Lisa Nicole Lopes in Philadelphia in 1971, Lisa shot to fame when she teamed up with Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas to form TLC.
1992's debut album "Oooooh... On the TLC Tip" spawned three top ten hits, 1994's "Crazysexycool" went on to sell more than 10 million copies with hits like "Waterfalls" and "Red Light Special". "FanMail" followed in 1999 with hits "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty".
Any fears that the new solo career leaves TLC on the scrapheap are quickly dispelled. "Actually TLC is in the studio recording our fourth album right now. Chilli (Rozonda Thomas) is going to release a solo project, she's going to wait until after the TLC album and Tionne (Watkins), T-Boz, she is thinking about doing one. No, everything's good, everything's good. Sometimes you never know which way things are going to go . Fortunately we're actually happy to be back in the studio."
Lisa's solo debut "Supernova" has been a long time coming.
"I actually wanted to do a solo album since the birth of TLC and I tried to do one about four years ago but unfortunately it didn't work - but everything happens for reason. We decided to put the "FanMail" project out and to wait until after that to do the solo album. So you know, finally we get around to that."
In "Supernova", Lisa emerges as a formidable and complex new voice. Breakthrough performances on tracks like "Hot"
(produced by Rockwilder) and the Salaam Remi-produced "The Block Party" reveal a funky, proud songstress. But the story behind all that positive energy is not so sweet.
"There's a lot of sick people in the world, a lot of people who are struggling and suffering, and just not happy, and I used to be one of those people, and I used to wish that my life would end. If I was twenty I'd say "I can't stand, I don't know if I'm going to live to be another twenty years, I can't go through another twenty years of what I've been through". You know my mom would look at me and say "Oh, I'm so sad to hear you say that. And if you don't know what it feels like to be happy, you don't know what you don't know, you know, so it's like there's no hope. But it doesn't really have to be that way. I just want to make music and I want to do a lot of things that are going to really inspire people and improve the quality of their lives."
Supernova is released in the UK on 29 November.
