- Story Text: Julia Roberts made her first post-Benjamin Bratt public appearance on Tuesday, July 17 in Los Angeles when she attended the World Premiere of her latest romantic comedy "America's Sweethearts,"
co-starring John Cusack, Catherine Zeta Jones and Billy Crystal.
, Fresh from her victory on Oscar night, and the end of her off-screen relationship with fellow actor Benjamin Bratt, Julia Roberts is back with "America's Sweethearts," a new romantic comedy from former Disney studio chief turned director Joe Roth.
Roberts plays the sister and personal assistant to a difficult prima donna actress and superstar played by Catherine Zeta Jones. The film takes place at a weekend-long press junket for the actress' latest sci-fi film, which just happens to co-star her soon-to-be ex-husband, played as a neurotic and insecure actor by John Cusack.
The whole weekend is orchestrated by a studio publicist played by Billy Crystal, who also co-wrote the film's screenplay based on his experiences in Hollywood.
Crystal's character must arrange for the feuding co-stars to appear civil to each other and sell the movie to a bunch of journalists who can't stand to see them apart.
The film also co-stars Stanley Tucci as a stressed-out studio chief, which, ironically, was his director Joe Roth's old job, Hank Azaria as Zeta Jones' new boyfriend, a fiery and hard-to-understand Spaniard and Seth Green as Crystal's protg and fellow publicist at the studio.
Besides being a romantic comedy, "America's Sweethearts" also gives audiences a behind-the-scenes peek at the lengths publicists will go to in order t o sell a movie to the public.
Although the events of the story are heightened for comedic effect, all the stars say the characters and situations are all based in reality and could very easily happen in today's Hollywood.
The stars of the film were all present for the celebrity-studded premiere in LA. After much speculation, Julia Roberts arrived alone, and spoke briefly to journalists.
