- Story Text: Pop rock legends Genesis are an integral part of British music history, surviving several changes in line up and three decades making music. Now the latest technology is being used to bring a new perspective on one of their classic concerts with the release of a DVD version.
After thirty four years, twenty one albums and six different members, Genesis know a thing or two about music.
Current members are officially Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, the original two members, although both are constantly working on a vast range of other products. Phil Collins left the band in 1996, but has joined up with his former band-mates to promote the latest release from the massive and ever-popular Genesis archives.
Taking a 1992 concert at London's Earl's Court, the footage of the show has been formatted to include never before seen shots and super-quality sound.
"It was the last tour we did, as Genesis, as this Genesis, so it was the most recent, and because it was the most recent one tends to think it was a good example of as best we could present a show, and it was a show where we had all these extra cameras so it wasn't as practical to do it for an old show."
"I think for people that like the group its a chance to, you've got a regular video, but very high quality, the sound is remixed and is much better, and obviously DVD quality in that sense, but apart from that you've got three extra streams of video on each song so you can watch a different video each time if you want, also you can edit between them if that is what you want to do. I think that what's been fun for most people is that once they've seen the thing and they know it, it just gives them a chance to see some of the other things going on on stage, there are quite funny moments there is a great moment in the medley when Phil takes over from Chester and Chester is going along quite happily like this, and just before the last beat he plays, or you think he is going to play he puts the sticks down and walks off, because at that point Phil comes in on the down beat with another thing, and it's something you would never know about if you hadn't seen it like that, so it's quite funny, so it's designed to be informative and interesting, some of the actual other camera positions look great in themselves as well."
After so long in the business, the guys have certainly seen some changes, in today's world on overnight success stories and throwaway pop hits, a career like this is remarkable, especially as they are all still on speaking terms! "It was a very different time, all those years that we were happening as a band, compared to now I think it was easier to have longevity, we were a strong touring band, so regardless of how albums did in the early days, there was an ongoing thing with an audience, a cult, big cult following, that makes it easier to carry on, a cult thing lasts, fans stay with a band quite a long time.
"It boils down to the fact that we enjoy each other's company a lot, we are good friends, you see some bands and I read interviews and you hear through the grapevine that certain people won't even be in the same room as each other, they won't talk to each other, you wonder why they were actually friends in the first place, we get on great, so there is every possibility in theory that we would write music again together, whether we would write music and call it a reunion tour and call it Genesis, I wouldn't go as far as to say that, because maybe it would be the kiss of death to call it Genesis because everyone's expectations would be at a certain level, I think the most important thing is actually writing the music and it being good and enjoying the process of doing it and I think we are all capable of doing that."
So although hardcore fans may not have any new material to feast their ears on, they will certainly enjoy the new DVD release, which features some of the band's biggest hits such as Mama and We Can't Dance. But for Genesis, it has always been about quality music making as well as chart hits.
"When you go back and see a live concert it reminds you that some of our strongest moments were our longer songs, long instrumentals, instrumental passages, playing, which until you hear albums, you don't hear in on the radio anymore, those kinds of bands aren't played on the radio anymore."
"Musical soundbites nowadays really, no-ones encouraged, on the radio no-one will play, and haven't done for a long time, long tracks, because that means that advertising is cut down, so it automatically changes the way people make music, because if they are not going to get played on the radio, so people make music that will get played on the radio, so before long you have got a style of music that has nothing to do with what people would like to hear given a choice, and whenever we've heard, when we went round America for We Can't Dance, occasionally we'd hear a DJ that was brave enough to play it, and he's get requests, like what was that, I've never heard anything like that before, that went from A to C via B and took eight minutes as opposed to three minutes long and there is a whole bunch of people out there that would like to hear that kind of music, but it is not made that much anymore."
"We Can't Dance" DVD is currently on release in the UK.
